Practicality of Video Game Weapons in Real Life

I was watching a MAN AT ARMS video, where they made the energy sword from Halo, and starting thinking “there are a bunch of amazing weapons in games that would probably be super useless in real life.” So I thought some more and came up with a list of 5 video game weapons that would be totally impractical to use in the real world.

In no particular order.

  1.  Fat Man (Fallout Series): Gordo This weapon takes a regular grenade launcher and bumps it up a few notches. Firing mini nuclear warheads, the Fat Man is one of the most powerful weapons in Fallout. But how about it real life? It fires NUCLEAR missiles at a pretty short range…the person firing this thing would probably feel the effects of radiation after the second shot.
  2. Buster Sword (Final Fantasy VII): BusterSwordAnother video game weapon recreated by Man at Arms, the Buster Sword is one of the iconic weapons from the Final Fantasy series wielded by the main protagonist of VII, Could Strife. As the above picture illustrates, the sword is about the size of an average size man. Yes there are real life weapons like the Zweihander and Odachi that are similar lengths but the are hardly the same width or thickness of the Buster sword. Most great swords used for combat in the past rarely weighed more that 10 lbs, I doubt the buster sword is less than 15-20.
  3. Turtle Shells (Mario Series)RedShellWe are still imagining that weapons listed have the same function as they do in game. The infamous turtle shells from Mario might be incredibly useful if aimed correctly during a race but carrying around giant turtle shells and chucking them at people sounds insane. Also, most species of turtles are protected so in order to stock up on ammo you will be breaking some pretty serious laws.
  4. M-490 Blackstorm (Mass Effect 2)M490From a Mass Effect 2 weapons DLC, the M-490 is a weapon that basically fires mini-black holes. Similar to the problem with the Fat Man from Fallout, this weapons will most likely end up injuring or killing the person who fires it. Plus, I am not a physicist, but opening a bunch of mini black holes on a planet may be a bad thing to do…
  5. Gravity Hammer (Halo Series)gravityhammer
If this was just a simple giant hammer, I’d allow it. But, the main feature of the “grav” hammer is its ability to release gravity shock waves. At an estimated 101 inches, this weapon is pretty tall and, with the mechanics inside that allow it to fire gravity blasts, it probably weights a ton. Now, if a person did have the strength to wield this weapon they would still have to deal with the chance of them being lifted up (just like in-game). The potential height an individual is lifted will most likely result in some broken bones.

Now, obviously these weapons weren’t created with real life mechanics in mind but it is still fun to imagine.

There are tons of more weapons out there that would be useless in real life, what kind of weapons from video games can you think of?
